Dr Patrick Heslin, a graduate of Maynooth University, was awarded the NUI Dr Éamon De Valera Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences 2021.

I am a mathematician from Gortletteragh, Co. Leitrim. I attended Maynooth University for my B.Sc. and M.Sc. before moving to the U.S. for my doctoral studies. My Ph.D. was completed in 2021 under the supervision of Prof. Gerard Misiołek at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

My research interests lie primarily in the geometry and analysis of non-linear partial differential equations arising in fluid dynamics and other areas of mathematical physics. In particular, I am interested in Riemannian geometry of diffeomorphism groups. The aim of the proposed research for this Fellowship is to bring modern geometric tools to bear on old and challenging problems from classical analysis.

It is an honour to receive the NUI Dr. Éamon de Valera Post-Doctoral Fellowship. This award provides me with a uniquely perfect opportunity to focus entirely on my research during a critical phase of my career. Being based at Maynooth University, home to experts in the field of Riemannian geometry, while having the means to continue collaborating internationally, is a dream scenario. I’m looking forward to it immensely.
