NUI Chancellor welcomes decision authorising
RCSI to use the title of university in Ireland

The NUI Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning welcomed the announcement (10 December 2019) by the Minister for Education Mr Joe McHugh TD and the Minister of State for Higher Education that the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) has been authorised to use the title of university in Ireland.

The Chancellor said “This is a very positive development. RCSI has been part of the National University of Ireland since 1977. It has been NUI’s role to ensure that the educational standards in Medicine and Health Sciences are comparable with the standards in the Schools of Medicine in the NUI constituent universities and we have consistently attested to that comparability. RCSI which is very active in international education has been entitled to call itself a university outside Ireland. We have actively supported RCSI in its endeavour to be given the right to call itself a university in Ireland and we are delighted that the College has now been authorised to do so”.
