Dr Garret FitzGeraldThe National University of Ireland mourns the loss of its beloved former Chancellor, Dr Garret FitzGerald who held the office with great distinction from 1997 until 2009. Dr Maurice Manning, who succeeded Dr FitzGerald as Chancellor, on learning of his death, said ‘Garret FitzGerald was a giant in many spheres of Irish public life. Throughout his whole life he contributed in an outstanding way to Irish society, Irish politics and the Irish people. The country is the poorer today for his loss. We, in the National University of Ireland, the University to which he was so devoted and for which he provided such inspirational leadership, grieve his loss particularly and send our deepest sympathies to the FitzGerald family.’
