Sonas na hAthbhliana - Happy New Year

05.01.2012

Sonas na hAthbhliana oraibh go léir!

I am happy to send New Year's greetings to colleagues throughout NUI and to all our friends in higher education and elsewhere from 49 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. This fine Georgian House dating from the 1790s became the home of the National University of Ireland in 1912. One hundred years on, it is reassuring to look back on the achievements of our predecessors who, in their first decade here, successfully steered the federal university through tumultuous national and international upheavals. Their focus throughout was on fulfilling the mission articulated in the university charter to ‘encourage original research, promote scholarship, and spread learning’. At this start of 2012, we pledge our energies to continuing on this mission and promoting these core values of higher education for the benefit of all associated with the NUI universities and colleges, NUI graduates worldwide and higher education in general.

Maurice Manning, Chancellor
