The biennial NUI Edward Phelan lecture was delivered on Tuesday 17 September 2019 at 18:15 in the Hibernia Conference Centre, Dublin Castle.
This years’ lecture celebrated the ILO centenary and was delivered by Nobel Laureate, Mr Kailash Satyarthi, following The Declaration of Philadelphia Revisited conference.
Mr Satyarthi won the Nobel prize in 2014 for his contribution towards the ending of child labour and his advocacy of the rights of children and young people to education. His lecture will have a particular focus on the position of children.
Respondents to the lecture was Guy Ryder, Director General ILO; Heather Humphreys, TD, Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation; Danny McCoy, Chief Executive Officer, IBEC and Patricia King, Secretary General, ICTU.
The Lecture was followed by a reception.
This lecture series was established in 2013 by NUI and ILO to honour Edward J. Phelan. Born in Ireland, Edward Phelan had a distinguished career at the International Labour Organisation. He was official advocate of the ILO Project at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, became its fourth Director in 1941 and Director General under its new constitution in 1946. He was the innovator of the ILO ‘tripartite’ formula which forms the basis of representation at International Labour Conferences. Each country’s delegation includes not only Government delegates, but also representatives of workers’ and employers’ organizations, a model for social partnership.
