Mary Hayden: Irish Historian and Feminist
1862-1942 by Joyce Padbury
Welcoming the publication of Mary Hayden Irish Historian and Feminist 1862-1942, the NUI Chancellor, Dr Maurice Manning congratulated Joyce Padbury on this long-needed and thoroughly engaging biography. Mary Hayden was an important figure in the early history of the National University of Ireland, a leading feminist, a suffragist and the only woman member of the first NUI Senate.
At a time when many would argue that much still remains to be done to achieve true equality for women within the university, NUI is very pleased to have supported (through the NUI Grant towards Scholarly Publication) this important biography of a woman who to a considerable extent made this her life’s cause and in her time achieved significant gains for women.
Joyce Padbury, who herself had a long and distinguished career in senior administration in UCD, supporting a number of Presidents, has done NUI a service in producing this well-researched biography of this leading early NUI feminist. The book will be of considerable interest both within and outside higher education.
