In a tribute today to Professor Enda McDonagh, the NUI Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning said ‘With the death of Enda McDonagh, Ireland has lost one of the most brilliant theologians the country has produced, an intellectual giant, a man of great vision and a warm, caring human being. Throughout his long life, Enda McDonagh made an exceptional contribution academically, enjoyed an international reputation in his discipline and contributed energetically in many other spheres. While his ideas, his commitment to social and institutional change and the humanistic values he espoused frequently met with opposition, they undoubtedly over time can be seen to have had an influence been influential in Irish life and society. A member of the NUI Senate for many years, Enda recognised the transformative effect of higher education both on the individual and on society as a whole and rejoiced in its expansion in Ireland over his lifetime. I am saddened that his kind, benign voice is stilled.
