The Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning paid tribute to the exceptional contribution to Irish archaeology made by the later Professor George Eogan, Emeritus Professor of Celtic Archaeology at UCD. ‘George devoted his professional life to the excavation and study of the area where he came from, the Boyne Valley in Co. Meath. Through his amazing work at Knowth, we now have much greater knowledge and understanding of the civilisation of the Boyne Valley and the builders of the passage graves, found in Ireland and across Europe. Using the sun as their guide, in the way now many centuries later we are harnessing solar power for energy, they created these enduring monuments which continue to fascinate.
‘Throughout his long life, George was an inspiration to generations of Irish archaeologists. He leaves behind a rich and enduring legacy.
‘My deepest sympathy to his family.’
