11.30am-1pm on Friday, 8 October 2021
Please join us at 11.30am on Friday, 8 October 2021 for the next NUI Education and Society (online) seminar, What are Universities for? Exploring Irish university education and the public good.
The event will mark the launch of NUI Discussion Paper No.2 The Contribution of Mass Higher Education in Ireland to the Public Good: Perceptions within and outside Irish universities. This paper is the outcome of research conducted Dr Ann Averill, the 2018-20 NUI Dr Garret FitzGerald Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Social Sciences. This fellowship was established to honour the memory of the late Chancellor of the National University of Ireland and is used to provide research support to the NUI Education and Society Committee.
Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, President of NUI Galway, will chair the webinar. Dr Ann Averill will present her paper with a response from Dr Andrew Loxley (CAVE, Trinity College Dublin). Professor Rachel Brooks (University of Surrey) will present findings from her EuroStudents study, ‘Constructing the Higher Education Student: A comparative study of six European countries’ with a response from Clare Austick, President of the Union of Students in Ireland. The webinar will close with a panel discussion involving Professor Marie Clarke (University College Dublin) and all the speakers.
