NUI Chancellor pays tribute to Pat Hume

06.09.2021

Speaking of his sorrow on learning of the death of Pat Hume, the NUI Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning said ‘The city of Derry, Northern Ireland and the whole of Ireland have lost a great woman, a woman who combined immense courage, self-sacrifice, integrity and intelligence with great personal warmth and charm. Over several decades Pat Hume played an incalculable role, largely behind the scenes, in bringing peace and stability to Northern Ireland. Having previously honoured John Hume, NUI was privileged to honour Pat in her own right for her own significant achievements in 2004. On that occasion, the then President of Maynooth University Dr Seamus Smyth proposed her for the degree “as a person who has in her life and actions demonstrated the fundamental transcendence of the human spirit, and unfailing courage in the face of adversity”. In sadness today, we honour her spirit. My deepest sympathy to the Hume family on their great loss.’

The entire citation given on that occasion is available here
