Paying tribute to the late Seamus Deane, Dr Maurice Manning said ‘one of the brightest stars to light up the English Department in UCD and build its international reputation has gone out. Seamus Deane was a brilliant scholar who inspired generations of students in UCD with the wealth and breadth of his knowledge. He was interdisciplinary before the term became commonplace, bringing his vast reading in sociology, philosophy and politics to bear on his literary criticism. One of the exceptionally talented generation to emerge from Derry, he leaves behind a wealth of literary criticism, poetry, editing and his unforgettable novel Reading in the Dark. Irish intellectual life is the poorer for his loss.’
On behalf of the National University of Ireland, I extend my deep sympathy to his family.
