The National University of Ireland wishes to extend its best wishes to Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh as he announced that he is stepping down from the presidency of University of Galway.

During his time at the helm, Prof Ó hÓgartaigh brought University of Galway from strength to strength, with the university achieving high rankings, including top 50 in the world for their impact on the Sustainable Development Goals. Ranked by IBEC as in the Top100 employers in Ireland for wellbeing, University of Galway also won Athena Swan awards for gender equality and introduced policies and initiatives for inclusion, consent and support for those suffering from domestic violence. Prof Ó hÓgartaigh also saw University of Galway securing its highest ever research income in the university’s history in 2023.
NUI Registrar Dr Patrick O’Leary said: “Whether it was as president of University of Galway while I was Head of School of Chemistry or as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Senate member of NUI during my time as Registrar, Professor Ó hÓgartaigh has made invaluable contributions to the higher education sector through his leadership and expertise.”
