PUBLICATION OF THE FIRST REGISTER OF ELECTORS FOR THE
NEW SEANAD ÉIREANN HIGHER EDUCATION CONSTITUENCY

DUBLIN, Ireland, 1 April 2025: National University of Ireland is pleased to announce the production of the first Register of Electors for the new Seanad Éireann Higher Education constituency. There are a total of 62,775 electors on this Register of Electors.

The registration window for this register opened on 17 December 2024 and closed on 23 January 2025. Applications were made by post and through the bespoke online portal SeanadVoter.ie.

The production of this Register of Electors marks a historic moment in the expansion of the franchise for Seanad Éireann. Following the signing into law of the Seanad Electoral (University Members) (Amendment) Act 2024, the new Higher Education constituency includes Irish citizens who are over eighteen years of age and hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from one of the designated institutions.
The electors in this new constituency will elect six senators to Seanad Éireann.

NUI is proud to have produced the first Register of Electors for the
new Seanad Éireann Higher Education constituency. This responsibility
is an honour and a continuation of the legacy of NUI’s involvement in
Seanad Éireann. We are grateful for the hard work from staff across
the designated institutions, whose efforts were essential to the
successful production of the Seanad Éireann Higher Education
constituency Register of Electors.

Dr Patrick O’Leary
Registrar of NUI and Chief Registration Officer

Since the Seventh Amendment of the Constitution (Election of Members of Seanad Éireann by Institutions of Higher Education) in 1979, NUI has supported this necessary expansion of the franchise and is proud to be a key component in creating and maintaining this new Register of Electors.

This is a historic occasion for the NUI, the wider university sector and
the Seanad as a whole. The creation of the new Register of Electors
was no small task, and I congratulate all those who made it possible.

Professor Michael B. Murphy
Chancellor of NUI
