Niamh Keady-Tabbal



Niamh Keady-Tabbal was awarded the NUI Dr Peter Sutherland Travelling Studentship in European Studies 2019.

Niamh is a second-year PhD researcher in Law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUI Galway. Her research focuses broadly on migration, border securitization, and access to asylum procedures in Greece. She holds an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the Irish Centre for Human Rights. She also graduated with a first-class honours degree in Middle Eastern Studies with French, from Trinity College Dublin.

As a Traveling Studentship recipient, Niamh has conducted field research in Greece. Most recently, in collaboration with Dr Itamar Mann (University of Haifa), she has been investigating emerging patterns of border violence on the Aegean. Their research has contributed to international advocacy, including the reports of civil society organizations, such as Human Rights Watch, and was disseminated across numerous media platforms, including Al Jazeera, France 24, and the New York Times.

The NUI Dr Peter Sutherland Travelling Studentship in European Studies was awarded in 2019 in honour of the late Dr Peter Sutherland SC, in respect of his work in the area of EU student mobility and his wider range of EU-related interests and experience.
