From 1st - 3rd December, the National University of Ireland hosted a conference (Leading Universities in the Twenty-First Century) - a high point in the NUI celebrations for its centenary year. The three-day proceedings culminated in the awarding of honorary doctorate degrees, the NUI’s highest honour, on six distinguished persons, as follows:
Sean Donlon
former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Limerick: LLD
Peter Gregson
President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University of Belfast: DSc
Dermot Martin
Archbishop of Dublin: LLD
Emily O’Reilly
Ombudsman and Information Commissioner: LLD
Tony Scott
founder of the Young Scientist Exhibition: DSc
Hildegard Tristram
Celtic Studies Scholar: DlittCelt
One further honorary graduand, Thomas Hammerberg, Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner, had to withdraw from the conferring ceremony, due to the critical situation in the Caucasus. The Commissioner, however, sent a letter which was read to the assembly by Dr. Maurice Manning.
