The Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning conferred NUI degrees at the RCSI Conferring Ceremony held in the National Concert Hall on 2 June 2011. Addressing the new graduates, the Chancellor referred to recent events in Ireland ‘And what a time it is to be celebrating in Ireland: these last few weeks have seen quite a few red letter days, occasions of great importance in Ireland’s political and public life, days that few thought they would see in their lifetimes. For the class of 2011, you will look back on your graduation as coming immediately after the visits of Queen Elizabeth the Second and President Obama, at a time when Ireland was on a much needed high in the midst of great dreariness in the economy. For you that high is continuing today and we are glad also to take part in its extension.’
Dr Manning continued ‘Of course, for the National University of Ireland, the period is also tinged with great sadness at the loss of that great Irishman, my predecessor as Chancellor of the University, Dr Garret FitzGerald. From 1997 until 2008, he conferred the degrees of RCSI graduates and I know was greatly pleased to see the progress made by RCSI in so many of its endeavours, both in Ireland and overseas.’ Congratulating the new graduates, Dr Manning said ‘You have now entered the register of the University and joined the expanding community of NUI graduates. I know that wherever you go you will be worthy ambassadors for NUI degrees. I wish you well wherever you go.’
