Expressing his deep sadness at the death of Maeve Binchy, the NUI Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning said that her joyful, optimistic personality had brightened many lives and that single-handedly she had significantly increased the nation’s happiness quotient. In her books, she had explored the depths of the human personality and the complexities of human life, with gentleness and humour but also with acute observation. On behalf of the National University of Ireland, he extended sympathy to her husband Gordon, her brother Professor William Binchy and sister Joan.
A graduate of UCD, Maeve Binchy was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Literature (DLitt) by the National University of Ireland in 1990.
