16.03.2018
On behalf of the National University of Ireland, I would like to wish a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all the members of the University, to the students and staff of the constituent universities and recognised colleges and to all NUI graduates in Ireland and around the world. St. Patrick’s Day is an important day to us as the National University of Ireland and one of great importance to Irish people around the world. We wish all members of the NUI community well in their celebrations in various locations across the globe.
I would also like to highlight the end of another great series of events as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2018. 2018, ‘Bliain na Gaeilge’ marks the 125 year anniversary of Douglas Hyde’s establishment of Conradh na Gaeilge on 31 July 1893 and the beginning of the major revival of the Irish language, so the promotion of the language is of even more significance this year than others. I would commend the work of Conradh na Gaeilge since that time and the great work of the Irish language schools, departments and offices in promoting the language on NUI campuses around the country.
The promotion of the Irish language has historically been and continues to be of great importance to the National University of Ireland. NUI will hold an Irish language lecture in honour of Doughlas Hyde later in the year and will also shortly seek nominations for Duaiseanna an Dr T K Whitaker, awards for masters students of Irish, launched in 2017.
Wishing you all a very Happy St Patrick’s Day.
Dr Maurice Manning
Chancellor
