Douglas Hyde’s American Tour 1905 - 1906 is the title of a lecture which will be given by Professor Liam Mac Mathúna in UCD Belfield on Tuesday 1 October as the second annual Hyde Lecture / Léacht de hÍde.

Hyde visited the US in those years as President of Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League), touring extensively from coast to coast. He was very well received, the tour was highly successful and raised substantial funds for the promotion of the Irish language.

Professor Mac Mathúna will discuss the major highlights of Hyde’s tour including his two visits to the White House where he had lunch with President Roosevelt. After his first visit to the White House, Hyde sent the above postcard to his daughter Nuala.

"Hyde’s American tour proved to be a resounding success,
a triumph not just for the cause, but for the man as well."

Professor Mac Mathúna

Douglas Hyde was the first President of Ireland, serving from 1938 to 1945, the first president of Conradh na Gaeilge and the first Professor of Modern Irish in UCD from 1909. In that year, he was also appointed as a member of the first Senate of NUI and was an active member of the Senate until 1919. Given these strong connections, NUI and UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore are pleased to honour the memory of Douglas Hyde by collaborating in this lecture series.

This lecture series, organised jointly by NUI and UCD, was inaugurated in September 2018 by President Michael D. Higgins who spoke in UCD on the theme of ‘the Legacy of Douglas Hyde’. The publication of that lecture will be launched at the 2019 lecture on 1 October.
