Press Release: NUI Seanad Éireann election 2020

30.03.2020

Press Release:
Seanad Éireann election 2020 for the NUI Constituency

The close of poll in the Seanad Éireann election for the three seats in the NUI constituency is tomorrow, Tuesday 31 March 2020 at 11.00 am.

The counting of postal votes will begin after the close of poll and is expected to continue until Thursday 2nd or possibly Friday, 3rd April.  The count will take place in Shelbourne Hall, RDS, Dublin. With one day left till the close of poll, some 35,000 cast ballot papers have been received.

In light of current restrictions on public gatherings arising from Covid-19, access to the count will be restricted to those who are legally entitled to be there. This includes the NUI Returning Office, staff involved in the count or in the management of the venue, candidates and their agents. The number of staff taking part in the count has been significantly reduced. A wide-range of appropriate safety measures has been put in place, in accordance with government guidelines and following consultation with the HSE, with a view to creating the safest possible environment for the count.

19 candidates are contesting the three vacant NUI seats for the new Seanad.

Returning Officer, Dr Attracta Halpin (deputising for Dr Maurice Manning who in accordance with government guidelines is cocooned) has urged candidates and their agents not to attend the RDS in person, in the interests or their own safety and that of the count staff.  Most have indicated that they will not attend.

NUI will live-stream the Count proceedings and results from 11am on Tuesday 31st March.

In addition, NUI will communicate updates on official results as the election count progresses, via:
