NUI Chancellor pays tribute to the late Professor John A. Murphy

01.03.2022

The Chancellor, Dr Maurice Manning, paid tribute to the exceptional academic, scholarly and parliamentary contributions made by the late Professor John A. Murphy, Emeritus Professor of Irish History at University College Cork. He held the chair from 1971 until his retirement in 1990. As a member of Seanad Éireann (1977-1983, 1983-1992) he played a leading part in public debate on Ireland’s historical and political values. He is the author of Ireland in the Twentieth Century, as well as a chronicler of the history of UCC: The college: A history of Queen’s /University College Cork, 1845-1995 and University College Cork: A portrait in words and images. In 2001, he was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa, by the National University of Ireland in recognition of his life-long contribution to Irish history and political life.

Throughout his career, and on into retirement, he was a mentor to generations of Irish historians. He had a keen intellect, a sharp mind, and a fine voice when called upon for an opinion and/or a song.

On behalf of the National University of Ireland, I extend my deepest sympathy to Professor Murphy’s family.
