Dr. Miriam Hederman O'Brien
PhD (TCD, 1980), Barrister at Law (Kings Inns Dublin, 1954), BA (UCD, 1953),
PhD (hc Maynooth 1995), LLD (hc NUI 2001), LLD (hc UU 2002), LLD (hc UL 2007).
The Chancellor, Dr Maurice Manning, paid tribute to the late Dr. Miriam Hederman O'Brien. During her long and varied career along with her legal work Dr. Hederman O’Brien worked on projects in the Civil and Public Service, Social Partnership, Freedom of Information, The Media, Health Services, Homelessness and the Arts. She was a committed European and promoted the ideals of Europe and her strong belief that Ireland should be part of that family. She served on many cross European legal and cultural bodies. She credited her time in the post-war Rome of the 50’s where she studied music for opening her eyes to the rich and poor in society and she said it radicalised her. She believed in the value of higher education and she held the posts of Chancellor of the University of Limerick and Director of the university of Limeirick Foundation.
In the words of de Buitléir and Ruane in a volume of essays celebrating her work she was 'a rare and exceptional person in the breadth of her interests and the quality of her contribution over so many fields.’
On behalf of the National University of Ireland, I extend my deepest sympathy to Dr. Hederman O'Brien’s family.
