NUI and the French Embassy formally launch collaborative grant
On 8 March 2024, His Excellency Vincent Guérend, the Ambassador of France to Ireland and the Registrar of the National University of Ireland Dr Patrick O’Leary, co-signed a memorandum of understanding between the two organisations. The MoU formalises the long-established relationship between the two organisations around academic awards dating back to 1926.
The MoU also establishes a new grant to support PhD students and academic staff travelling to France for short research visits. This new award develops on the existing collaborative awards for undergraduates, awards that consist of French Government medals and NUI prizes for proficiency in French for final year undergraduates.
“We are delighted that this new award will enable two highly talented scholars
to broaden their international experience in research. It is also heartening to be
able to expand our offering to more established scholars. This is essential for those
working in the highly globalised environment of education today. We are proud that
the international experience will be in France, Ireland’s closest EU partner.”
Dr Patrick O’Leary
NUI Registrar
“In collaboration with NUI, we are delighted to support exceptional students of
French and the mobility of researchers to France. I would like to thank NUI for
their commitment and long-standing relationship with the French Embassy in Ireland
which further enhances both the learning of French and academic exchanges between
France and Ireland.”
His Excellency Vincent Guérend
Ambassador of France to Ireland
The new award, the French Excellence-NUI Research Residency Grant is open to NUI PhD students and academic staff. The awards competition deadline is usually in October 2024. All applications for the grant must be made directly to the Embassy.
The proficiency awards for undergraduate students continues to be based on the results of the final examinations in French in NUI’s four constituent universities, UCC, UCD, Maynooth University and University of Galway. In addition to the medal, NUI awards a cash prize of €250 to each of the recipients.
