Ten Reasons for Irish HEIs to Treasure Languages Now
Recommencing its lecture and seminar series, National University of Ireland held its first ‘Higher Education Today and Tomorrow’ seminar in its offices at 49 Merrion Square on 29 February at 12:30.
Professor Mary Gallagher (UCD) delivered the seminar ‘Canaries in the mines and much more: ten reasons for Irish HEIs to treasure languages now’, with Dr Patrick Crowley (UCC, incoming Professor of French, University of Galway) as respondent.
In line with our recently published strategy, the recommencement of NUI lecture and seminar series will focus on areas of educational policy.
“I am very pleased to recommence our lecture and seminar series and
continue NUI’s legacy as a meeting point for collegiate discussion and
collaboration around higher education. Language learning is hugely important.
Beyond the language itself the study of languages gives students exposure to key
critical and analysis skills that will be invaluable as they progress. It also offers
global perspective and intercultural engagement. Today’s seminar is an opportunity
to highlight the importance of language learning at higher education institutions.”

In 2018, the National University of Ireland and University College Cork hosted a symposium: Ireland’s ‘Languages Connect’ strategy: A symposium on perspectives for higher education’. With two years left on the strategy’s term (2017-2026), this seminar will revisit the significance of the ‘Languages Connect’ vision for the present and future of Irish Higher Education.
