Commenting on the improved rankings secured by the four NUI constituent universities, NUI Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning welcomed the results of the Times Higher Education – QS World Universities Rankings 2009. Dr Manning said that ‘while these rankings are imperfect instruments and may be criticised for underrating universities in non-English speaking countries, they have become increasingly important. In a world where the number of universities is growing and participation in higher education is increasing, it is vital that Irish universities are seen internationally as belonging in the first rank. For this reason, it is great news that UCD has been placed in the first hundred, that UCC and NUI Galway have both improved their positions and that for the first time NUI Maynooth is included in the rankings. We have always been confident in the quality of our universities. It is good that this is receiving international recognition. For these hard-won positions to be maintained will require continued investment in resources, continued striving for excellence in teaching and research and a continuing capacity to recruit high calibre students.‘
