Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki honoured at NUI Maynooth

Group Photo Chancellor's Election to RIA On Sunday 12 September 2010, at a ceremony in NUI Maynooth, the Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning conferred the honorary degree Doctor of Music on the internationally acclaimed Polish composer, conductor and educator, Professor Krzysztof Penderecki.

As part of the conferring celebrations, Prof Penderecki conducted the NUI Maynooth Chamber Choir, who this year celebrate their twenty-fifth anniversary, in a performance of his Benedictus (1993). An orchestra comprisng NUI Maynooth Music Department performance students and personnel from the RIAM and DIT performed the groundbreaking 1960 work Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima. A winner of three Grammy awards, Prof. Penderecki's work has been featured on a number of film soundtracks including; The Shining, The Exorcist and Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island.
